Program information & Requirements

Apply Now for the 2026 DOE MSIPP Geophysics for Environmental Management Students (GEMS) Summer Internship Program!

We warmly invite students to join us for this exciting 8-week summer internship program designed to provide hands-on experience in geophysics and hydrogeologic methods for environmental management.

The GEMS program begins with a two-week “scientific bootcamp” at Rutgers University’s Newark campus, where you’ll build foundational knowledge and practical skills in geophysics and hydrogeology. Following the bootcamp, you’ll apply your learning by contributing to a research project at one of our partner laboratories:

• Rutgers University, Newark, NJ
• California State University, Long Beach, CA
• Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, WA
• Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, CA

All travel and lodging costs will be covered

Elegibility

 We are committed to making this opportunity accessible to all eligible students. To apply, you should:

• Be enrolled at a U.S. institution of higher education.
• Be an undergraduate or graduate student during the program.

• Be a U.S. citizen.
• Be available to participate in person from May 25th to July 17th, 2026.


We strongly encourage applications from all students in STEM, especially students looking to expand their expertise within the environmental science field.
